Vincenza Spallone (MD, PhD), affiliated with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rom, Italy, holds a degree in Medicine, Board Certification and Ph.D. in Endocrinology. She has served as Aggregate Professor of Endocrinology, and holds the honorary rank of "Docens Turris Virgatae". In 2017, she attained the qualification as an Associate Professor in Endocrinology within the Italian higher education system. She has mentored over 55 final theses, and has extensive clinical experience in diabetic neuropathy.

She was member of the Toronto Consensus on Diabetic Neuropathy and the lead author of the Toronto guidelines on cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy. She is the Immediate Past President of the Diabetic Neuropathy Study Group NEUROdiab. She previously chaired the Neuropathy Study Group of the Italian Society of Diabetology and held executive positions in the EASD Neuropathy Study Group (NEURODIAB), the Italian Society for Neurovegetative Research, and the Italian Society of Diabetology.

Her research activities focused on diabetic neuropathy, with pioneering studies on cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy, have resulted in the publication of 400 works. She received the Valsalva Lecture Award from the Italian Society for Neurovegetative Research, and was included in the Stanford University Names World’s Top 2% Scientists 2023 and 2024. She has been invited speaker and chair at over 150 national and international meetings

Vincenza Spallone (MD, PhD), affiliated with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rom, Italy, graduated in medicine and obtained her board certification in endocrinology and PhD in Endocrinological and Metabolic Sciences from the University of Rome La Sapienza, Italy. She was Assistant and Aggregate Professor of Endocrinology until 2018 in the Department of Systems Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Rome Tor Vergata, and since 2018 has had the honorary rank of ‘Docens Turris Virgatae’, teaching endocrinology at the degree courses of medicine, postgraduate and masters courses at the same university. In 2017, she attained the qualification as an Associate Professor in Endocrinology within the Italian higher education system. Since 2019, she has been Honorary Professor at the State Institution V Danilevsky Institute for Endocrine Pathology Problems of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

Professor Spallone has been a panel member and external examiner in PhD courses, and has been tutor and main supervisor of more than 55 final theses at degree and PhD level and of the research activities of numerous junior researchers.

Her own research is focused on diabetic neuropathy, in particular on the multifaceted expression of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN), with pioneering studies on CAN impact on kidney function and blood pressure circadian rhythm and on standardisation of CAN testing, and on the epidemiology, clinical consequences and diagnosis of painful diabetic neuropathy with validation of DN4. Her research activities have resulted in 408 published works (articles, chapters, books, and abstracts) in journals such as Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Diabetes, Clinical Science, Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery Psychiatry, Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation, Pain, and Diabetes and Metabolism.

Professor Spallone has been a principal Investigator in 20 university-funded research projects and international clinical trials. She was the winner of the Valsalva Lecture Award of the Italian Society for Neurovegetative Research. She was included in the Stanford University Names World’s Top 2% Scientists 2023 and 2024. She was awarded of the Honorary Membership of the Hungarian Diabetes Association and of the Career Award of the Italian Society of Diabetology.

Professor Spallone is the Past President and now the Treasurer of NEUROdiab (Diabetic Neuropathy Study Group). She was also the Chair of the Neuropathy Study Group of the Italian Society of Diabetology and a member of the Executive Committees of the following societies: EASD Neuropathy Study Group (NEURODIAB), the Italian Society for Neurovegetative Research and the Italian Society of Diabetology. She has been a member of the editorial board of Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases and is currently Academic Editor of the Journal of Diabetes Research and Review Editor of Frontiers in Neuropathic Pain. She has been a reviewer for 206 articles for 38 journals, including Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Diabetes, Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, Molecular Metabolism and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

She has been Chair of European Funding Review Committee and was Chair of the Consensus Panel of the Diabetic Neuropathy Study Group of the Italian Society of Diabetology and the lead author of their 2011 Recommendations on Cardiovascular tests in diabetic autonomic neuropathy. She was a member of the Toronto Consensus on Diabetic Neuropathy and the lead author of their 2011 guidelines on cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy. She was also a member of the Italian Consensus Conference on Pain in Neurorehabilitation.

She has been a Chair and invited speaker at more than 150 meetings and was the Scientific Director for two e-Learning programs of Italian Society of Diabetology on the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and neuropathic pain in 2012 and 2017-2018.
