In this module, Module 2, we are going to discuss the physiology of fasting, and how fasting affects people with diabetes, whether type 1 diabetes, or type 2 diabetes. And, also, by the end of this module, we are going to know the effect of fasting on body weight, on total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and also triglycerides.

This second module explores the physiology of fasting and how Ramadan affects lifestyle patterns such as diet and sleep. The EPIDIAR study is discussed in detail examining the epidemiology of fasting for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. At the end of the module you will be invited to take part in knowledge checks to assess your understanding of the topics discussed.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Explain the pathophysiology of fasting in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes

Outline the clinical trial data investigating the impact of fasting during Ramadan on people with and without diabetes

Explain the risk factors for fasting during Ramadan and the effects of fasting on blood glucose, body weight, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides
