In this module, you’ll learn about the importance of tight glycaemic control and the appropriate gestational weight gain on pregnancy outcomes and also the possible treatment of diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, microalbuminuria or chronic hypertension during pregnancy. In addition, you’ll learn about the psychological challenges, such as fear, anxiety and depression, the woman may encounter and be given some ideas of how to support women with these challenges.

This module will introduce you to post-conception care in women with pre-existing diabetes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Explain the risks of excessive weight gain during pregnancy and the importance of dietetic and lifestyle support to minimise weight gain and promote a healthy lifestyle

Summarise the management of complications arising from pre-existing diabetes on pregnancy including the strategies to optimise glycaemic control from post conception to post-partum care

Plan the post-conception care of patients with pre-existing diabetes, including the psychological challenges
