Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and its complications are among the most common causes of hospitalisation, mortality and morbidity in type 1 diabetes and can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes. It is essential to understand the precipitating factors for DKA and to tailor education and interventions to the patient to prevent DKA and its recurrence. This module is designed to help you understand the importance of addressing the common precipitating factors that may lead to DKA and sets out the vital role patient and family education play in its prevention.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
✓ Identify the potential causes of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), including precipitating factors
✓ Analyse the role of patient education, including sick-day rules, and the impact of psychology and time of life in preventing DKA
✓ Plan your approach to supporting patients and their families to prevent DKA
This module includes self-marked assessments, such as knowledge checks and/or case studies, as well as a marked final assessment, which you can attempt up to five times. To complete the module, you must review all chapters, pass the final assessment (80% pass mark), and fill in our feedback form.
