My name is Nader Lessan. I’m a Consultant Endocrinologist at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi. I’ve been asked to talk about practical aspects of management of diabetes during the Ramadan fast. I’ll be doing that using some of the recent research, including continuous glucose monitoring studies.

This module concludes with a series of case studies to stimulate thought and provide opportunities to apply knowledge to realistic patient scenarios.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Explain the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for people with diabetes wishing to fast during Ramadan, including those using insulin pumps

Outline the major risks associated with fasting for people with diabetes and strategies to reduce risk, including anti-hyperglycaemic medication

Develop management plans for people with diabetes who wish to fast during Ramadan

This module includes self-marked assessments, such as knowledge checks and/or case studies, as well as a marked final assessment, which you can attempt up to five times. To complete the module, you must review all chapters, pass the final assessment (80% pass mark), and fill in our feedback form.
