Video transcript

Welcome to this e-Learning module on Navigating Hyperglycaemic Crises. This is an update of the current guideline from multiple societies, how to best treat patients with diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic states. This module will cover eight areas: epidemiology and outcome, I will do that for you. The (chapters) that I'm presenting are on the pathogenesis and the treatment of DKA and HHS. I'll be covering the diagnosis and definitions of DKA in HHS, and also the modifications that we need to make for special populations. I will discuss about the complications of hyperglycaemic crises and about how to prevent a recurrence of the hyperglycaemic crises which is a very important issue. So we hope that this update of hyperglycaemic crises is going to present you new evidence. We did a tremendous amount of work in reviewing the important information for you to take home and, of course, improve the life of people with diabetes,

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar states (HHS) including euglycaemic DKA and mixed presentations, using updated diagnostic criteria.

Summarise therapeutic strategies for managing DKA and HHS, including fluid replacement, insulin therapy, and potassium management, while considering patient-specific factors such as age, comorbidities, special populations and complications.

Examine strategies to prevent the recurrence of hyperglycaemic crises through patient education, structured follow-up plans, and the management of underlying precipitating factors such as infections, medication adherence, and social determinants of health.

This module includes self-marked assessments, such as knowledge checks and/or case studies, as well as a marked final assessment, which you can attempt up to five times. To complete the module, you must review all chapters, pass the final assessment (80% pass mark), and fill in our feedback form.
