My name is João Filipe Raposo. Currently, I’m the Clinical Director of APDP, the Portuguese Diabetes Association. I am also a professor at NOVA Medical School, Lisbon. And also the President of the Portuguese Diabetes Society. I’ll be speaking about therapeutic patient education since I consider this to be one of the most relevant things that every healthcare professional should aim to achieve [ideally] during every contact with people with diabetes. Therapeutic patient education is considered one of the keystones of the healthcare provider’s training in patient involvement in order to achieve the best outcome.

Empowering people with diabetes to manage their own condition is essential to effective treatment – and depends on comprehensive, ongoing patient education. This module gives a brief introduction to the history of patient education in diabetes, including some of the key concepts relating to education and behaviour-change interventions.
