Hello. I’m Kåre Birkeland and I’m an endocrinologist working in Oslo, Norway. I’m at the University of Oslo, working as a professor and at Oslo University Hospital. I’m going to talk about insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome.

Module 1 provides an introduction to insulin resistance, including the concept of the metabolic syndrome, the mechanisms and pathogenesis of insulin resistance and an overview of interventions to reverse it.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Explain the concept of insulin resistance and how insulin resistance leads to type 2 diabetes

Define the metabolic syndrome and the link between metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease

Evaluate the effectiveness of physical exercise and weight reduction to counter insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome
