Welcome to the e-learning module on the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. Actually, this could be a really small e-learning module, because we still do not fully understand the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. What we do know is that it is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system plays a crucial role in the destruction of the only cell in our body that can make insulin in a controlled manner, namely the beta cell, in the islets of Langerhans, in the pancreas.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Explain the mechanisms that lead to beta cell decline and destruction in type 1 diabetes

Explain how the genetic background of individuals may predispose them to type 1 diabetes

Outline how research using the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse contributes to the understanding of the decline of beta cells
