Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to The Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. I’m Roy Taylor, Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University and Hospitals. In discussing type 2 diabetes, it’s vital that we understand the physiology and especially the cause of this condition. It’s often regarded as complex and heterogenous, but in fact it cannot be so. Understanding the cause allows us to be able to treat the condition optimally.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Examine the evidence base demonstrating that weight gain and obesity lead to excess fat in the liver and pancreas, which drives type 2 diabetes in genetically susceptible individuals

Explain the multiple clinical benefits of dietary weight loss and important factors that support weight loss, weight maintenance and long-term remission of type 2 diabetes

Develop structured intensive weight-management plans with people with type 2 diabetes in whom weight loss is clinically indicated

This module includes self-marked assessments, such as knowledge checks and/or case studies, as well as a marked final assessment, which you can attempt up to five times. To complete the module, you must review all chapters, pass the final assessment (80% pass mark), and fill in our feedback form.
